When The Child awoke, she felt alone. A fire burned slowly in the cave. Mr. Eagle and The Prophet were missing. She went to the mouth of the cave. The sun shone. Her gut told her The Prophet had disappeared.
Butterflies |
The Macrolepidoptera family flying in the morning air resembled the thoughts in her head. She watched the different kinds of unique butterflies and moths, hoping. At midday, she knew, she would have to make it to Lily Pad on her own.
"That's what I hate about you, Prophet. Where are you?" she grumbled as she put out the fire and scattered the ashes. Grabbing her karabiners, she started descending the rocks to get to Lily Pad.
Lily Pad |
Arriving at her destination, she pushed Lily Pad out into the open stream and looked at the butterflies that were flying close to the banks among the trees and the wildflowers.
Soon, Lily Pad approached the open sea, and Mr. Whale rose up out of the water.
Mr. Whale |
"Mr. Whale, The Prophet has done it again. Sorry, but it's just you and me and the Macrolepidoptera Family I left back there."
Mr. Whale slapped the water with his fins.
"Can you tell me where he is?"
Mr. Whale slapped the water once with his fins.
"Oh, so you don't know?"
Mr. Whale slapped twice on the water, and The Child knew it was a helpless cause.
Mr. Eagle |
"Gaaaak, gaaaak, gaaaak," She heard above her.
"Mr. Eagle, where did The Prophet go?" The Child shouted.
"Gaaaak, gaaaak, " said Mr. Eagle as he flew farther out over the water.
The Child |
"Well, I guess it's me and you Mr. Whale," said The Child as she waved goodbye to the Macrolepidoptera family who were quickly disappearing from her view.

At least The Child has the companionship of Mr. Whale, after The Prophet's inexplicable disappearance. That's a comfort.

That prophet! Now what's he off doing? But did I detect a bit more confidence in the Child who took up her karabiners and made her way down the cliff to the Lilly Pad?
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed. Her confidence is growing.

I love Mr. Whale. I have encountered many whales on the water and they are always a source of mystery to me.

I have faith in the child. She doesn't need the prophet it seems! Great piece, thanks for sharing.

What I liked the most about this piece was that she had no fear. She's maturing and unafraid. She knows her job!
ReplyDeleteYes, she is maturing. Every day that she wakes up with the intention of facing the unknown and keep going changes her. Thank you for coming by.

I don't think The Prophet went anywhere, Child. I think maybe he's everywhere...

I so appreciate the first sentence of your second paragraph. A lovely image for the thoughts in the child's head. Cleverly chosen illustrations, too. Thanks for this lovely blog, Patricia.

Yes, it is hard to go off on our own sometimes, but we have to do it in order to grow and change. The child is growing!
ReplyDeleteSo true, my dear friend. However, in order to grow life demands that we get out of the boat and move forward.

The Prophet will be back. Why did the Prophet leave? Good question. Maybe so the child learns to rely on herself as well as others.
