Velocity, Velocimeter, Vectrino, A Fable out of The Child and The Prophet

The velocity, a phenomenon that often disturbed The Child, seized her attentiveness. Lily Pad had slowed down considerably; Mr. Whale was idling in the ocean as he carried her on his back. The Prophet seemed content examining the water lily; Octavio had gone down to the ocean floor, and every now and then she saw the shadow of Mr. Eagle flying slowly over her.

"I wonder how fast we're going."

"Why, Child?"

The Child

"It doesn't seem like we're moving."

"Oh."

"We're almost at a standstill, Prophet."

"Sometimes, it pays to decelerate."

"Why?"

"Why do you want to accelerate?"

"I asked you first, Prophet."

The Prophet

"Yes, you did, and I gave you an answer."

"With a question, Prophet?"

"How fast do you think we're going, Child."

"No idea."

"With a vectrino, you could measure it."

"What a vectrino?"

"A type of velocimeter, Child."

"And what's a velocimeter?"

The Prophet turned to examine the water lily.

Water Lily

"Don't you think Water Lily is beautiful?"

"Yes, she's a beauty, but you're evading my question."

"Oh."

Movement in the ocean caught her attention.

"Prophet?"

"Yes, "Child?"

"There's a disturbance in the sea."

"I know.  They're Kraken."

"Oh, My! Let's go."

"No, lie still, Child."

"But you said Kraken are coming."

"Yes, I did, and they're moving at a much faster velocity than you and me."

"And I'm supposed to just lie here on Mr. Whale?"

"Yes."

Kraken

Suddenly, the three Krakens came toward them and passed by.

"Prophet, did you see that?"

"Yes, Child."

"They didn't touch us."

"Of course not."

"Why?"

"Staying displays courage; fleeing fear."

  1. Another great lesson.
Staying put in the face of adversity is a "real" test of courage.
Reminds me of the quote: "The real tests of courage are much quieter. They are the inner tests, like remaining faithful when nobody's looking, like enduring pain when the room is empty, like standing alone when you're misunderstood."

    1. I love your quote because it is so true. The real tests of courage are much quieter just as the real tests of faith.

    1. Thank you so much, Susan. And yes, standing still during the chaotic is a test of our faith to whatever we believe.

  4. I'm pretty courageous but those Kraken would scare me. Sometimes getting out of the way is the best course.

  5. "Staying displays courage; fleeing fear." That makes total sense. Things usually aren't as bad as them seem.

    1. Indeed. Once we stand still we find out that what lies ahead is often only a smoke screen trying to scare us away.

  6. I enjoy working with horses that stand in the face of fear versus yielding to the natural flight impulse. It is a good lesson, as long as you listen to your spidey senses.

    1. Yes, indeed, Lady. Horses are a good example of not yielding.

  7. Just "being" takes some getting used to in our world where movement equates with progress and getting things done.

    1. Yes, they are true words. Staying the course in anything means courage. Unfortunately, we live in a society where we flee at the first sign of fear or pain or dissatisfaction.
