The velocity, a phenomenon that often disturbed The Child, seized her attentiveness. Lily Pad had slowed down considerably; Mr. Whale was idling in the ocean as he carried her on his back. The Prophet seemed content examining the water lily; Octavio had gone down to the ocean floor, and every now and then she saw the shadow of Mr. Eagle flying slowly over her.
"I wonder how fast we're going."
"Why, Child?"
The Child |
"It doesn't seem like we're moving."
"Oh."
"We're almost at a standstill, Prophet."
"Sometimes, it pays to decelerate."
"Why?"
"Why do you want to accelerate?"
"I asked you first, Prophet."
The Prophet |
"Yes, you did, and I gave you an answer."
"With a question, Prophet?"
"How fast do you think we're going, Child."
"No idea."
"With a vectrino, you could measure it."
"What a vectrino?"
"A type of velocimeter, Child."
"And what's a velocimeter?"
The Prophet turned to examine the water lily.
Water Lily |
"Don't you think Water Lily is beautiful?"
"Yes, she's a beauty, but you're evading my question."
"Oh."
Movement in the ocean caught her attention.
"Prophet?"
"Yes, "Child?"
"There's a disturbance in the sea."
"I know. They're Kraken."
"Oh, My! Let's go."
"No, lie still, Child."
"But you said Kraken are coming."
"Yes, I did, and they're moving at a much faster velocity than you and me."
"And I'm supposed to just lie here on Mr. Whale?"
"Yes."
Kraken |
Suddenly, the three Krakens came toward them and passed by.
"Prophet, did you see that?"
"Yes, Child."
"They didn't touch us."
"Of course not."
"Why?"

Another great lesson.
ReplyDeleteStaying put in the face of adversity is a "real" test of courage.
Reminds me of the quote: "The real tests of courage are much quieter. They are the inner tests, like remaining faithful when nobody's looking, like enduring pain when the room is empty, like standing alone when you're misunderstood."
Writer In Transit
I love your quote because it is so true. The real tests of courage are much quieter just as the real tests of faith.

A lovely response from Michelle, a reminder of the truth of your post Pat. Stand still when all about appears chaotic. Thank you ..
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Susan. And yes, standing still during the chaotic is a test of our faith to whatever we believe.

It would be hard to stay put if I saw those Kraken.
ReplyDeleteI believe we only know it when we're in the crisis.

I'm pretty courageous but those Kraken would scare me. Sometimes getting out of the way is the best course.

"Staying displays courage; fleeing fear." That makes total sense. Things usually aren't as bad as them seem.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Once we stand still we find out that what lies ahead is often only a smoke screen trying to scare us away.

I enjoy working with horses that stand in the face of fear versus yielding to the natural flight impulse. It is a good lesson, as long as you listen to your spidey senses.
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed, Lady. Horses are a good example of not yielding.

Just "being" takes some getting used to in our world where movement equates with progress and getting things done.
ReplyDeleteExactly, and we are so busy trying to be until the real essence of being slips away.

What an inspiring post about standing our ground! The prophet is very wise. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteLearning to stand instead of retreating is a difficult lesson to learn for all of us, I believe.

It is good that the child has a wise guide.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think so too. What would she do without The Prophet? I don't want to find out.

Aha! I see the Kraken have made their appearance. I wonder how fast they were travelling. Well, I won't ask the prophet.
ReplyDeleteI thank you. Those Kraken were your idea and it got my imagination working toward a way to include them in my Fable. Thank you because it was an excellent idea.

Wise words. And I enjoyed the image and reference to the kraken while the Prophet's joy was palpable in the former installment. Excellent writing!

Love the last line, "Staying displays courage; fleeing fear." True words. @sheilamgood at Cow Pasture Chronicles
ReplyDeleteYes, they are true words. Staying the course in anything means courage. Unfortunately, we live in a society where we flee at the first sign of fear or pain or dissatisfaction.

Such a true sentiment. More than once I've moved on, it may have been better to stay put! But right now standing still is the hardest thing I've ever done!
ReplyDeleteGreat lesson!
This is so peaceful and centered, Patricia. Beautiful. Thank you.
